1 pm - 6 pm

#TacomaBeerWeek is upon us and here at Wingman Brewers Tacoma we're kicking it off with some childhood nostalgia. Get ready to relive your scout-days at our first ever, Rain Gutter Regatta! If you've never Regatta'd, here's the basics: - Build a boat before the event, and don't be afraid to express yourself! We have identified an approved boat kit, linked with details below. Honestly though, we probably won't disapprove any boat you bring as long as it doesn't have a motor (rubber band motors included).

  • Bring your beautiful creation to our Taproom the day of the races
during our registration and practice hours. Registration is open
between 1:00-3:00pm on race day, Aug. 11th.
  • Race your boat! Racing consists of using a straw (don't worry we'll
get biodegradable ones) to blow, blow, blow your boat the length
of a water-filled rain gutter against a matched opponent. First
across the finish line moves on!

Registration:
Pre-registration is available and highly encouraged (so we can anticipate numbers and design the brackets). To pre-register, simply send us a direct message with the name of your boat. You may also register the day of the event, between 1:00-3:00pm. Racers will be able to take a few practice runs during this time.

Price: $9.77 online

Boat kits will also be available for purchase in the taproom for $10 starting Friday, Aug. 2nd. Please pre-order with us so we have a rough idea of how many to order.

Prizes:
Prizes and trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers. Winners will also be featured on our social media channels, hailing as the champions they are!

Featuring unreleased instrumentals by Eddie Vedder and never before seen footage and photos of Robert Kennedy, the feature-length documentary sits at the intersection of politics, human rights, environmentalism and adventure. Also, you can enjoy local beer throughout the week at The Grand Cinema.

Tacoma Beer Week "Dune" SudsPop

Peaks and Pints, Proctor

7 pm - 9 pm

*TICKETED EVENT*

Hey Tacoma GeekMoms and GeekDads! There is plenty of summer vacation season left on the calendar, and boredom may already be settling in around your house. So what are some fun, geeky places to take your geeklets? Dune Peninsula should top your list. The 11-acre park, aptly named for the environmental-themed, sci-fi novel “Dune,” written by Tacoma native Frank Herbert, is in your backyard! Just don’t schedule your other geeky excursions during Tacoma Beer Week Aug. 11-17. Peaks and Pints will host a Dune SudsPop Wednesday, Aug. 14 starring the man who championed Dune Peninsula, sci-fi author and Metro Park Board Commissioner Erik Hanberg, with music by hometown musician Doug Mackey, who grew up in the shadow of Dune Peninsula’s former occupant, the ASARCO smelter. Toss in Tacoma’s historical brewery, Pacific Brewing & Malting Co., and you can’t get more Tacoma for Tacoma Beer week.

For the past year, Peaks and Pints has hosted SudsPop nights pairing a brewer, an exclusive one-off beer brewed by the special guest brewer and a chosen artist or band in our East Wing events room. The Tacoma Beer Week Dune SudsPop will be the first time the host isn’t a brewer, although Pacific Brewing brewers will be in the house.

“The theme in ‘Dune’ of a world destroyed by environmental catastrophe drew in part from Frank Herbert’s life experiences in Tacoma, which in the 1950s was one of the nation’s most polluted cities,” said Park Board Commissioner Erik Hanberg, in a media release. “The characters in the novel have a goal to ‘terraform’ their planet back to its inhabitable origins. That’s what we’ve done here. We have terraformed a polluted wasteland into a beautiful environment for all to enjoy.”

Did Hanberg envision the Frank Herbert Trail that loops around the Peninsula when he hosted “Cocktails Through a Stillsuit: A Toast to Frank Herbert” at the former Hilltop Kitchen in 2013? Were the Dune Peninsula six slides that lead down to a marina complex part of Hanberg’s presentations to Rotary clubs in 2014? Did he have plans for Dune Peninsula’s ginormous lawn when he was named “Best Tacoman” in the Weekly Volcano’s 2014 best of Tacoma issue? These are just a few of the many things you’ll discover while sipping Pacific craft beer Aug. 14 at Peaks and Pints.

Hanberg won’t be the only human with stories to tell during Peaks and Pints Dune SudsPop Aug. 14. Mackey, an equity actor, screenplay writer, former Weekly Volcano columnist, former Museum of Glass emcee, artist, songwriter, band member and sound engineer — including co-founder and sound engineer of the Channel 253 podcast hub with Hanberg and Marguerite Martin — has seen a thing or two. The singer/songwriter will, no doubt, sprinkle Tacoma stories between his songs.

Peaks and Pints promises not to re-create the foul smoke environment that plagued Herbert’s Tacoma neighborhood, nor allow vicious sandworms depicted in “Dune” to invade our cozy SudsPop event room. We do promise an enjoyable night of Tacoma stories, Tacoma grown music and Tacoma made beer. Cheers!

TACOMA BEER WEEK “DUNE” SUDSPOP, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, Peaks and Pints, 3816 N. 26th St., Basecamp Proctor, Tacoma, $14 RSVP for first 20 people.

Your night begins sipping lagers brewed by the six breweries at Peaks, then rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrPWOCK! next door at Chalet Bowl, before walking back to Peaks for more lagers while watching Jeff Bridges playing “the Dude,” a laid-back, easygoing burnout whom happens to have the same name as a millionaire whose wife owes a lot of dangerous people a whole bunch of money. Coffee beers will takeover our Western red cedar tap log, including the coffee beer collaboration between Tacoma’s Bluebeard Coffee Roasters and Bellingham’s Kulshan Brewing. Peaks and Pints Pacific Northwest Cider Invitational

Peaks and Pints, Proctor

11 am - 10 pm

Just as the world is collectively turning its back on the gnarly inedibility of the Red Delicious — the more aromatic Gala may now be the no. 1 apple grown in America — so, too, has cider moved far beyond its sickly-sweet reputation. When Peaks and Pints Pacific Northwest Cider Invitational returns to anchor Tacoma Beer Week Sunday, Aug. 18, it will brim with more than 20 craft ciders and cider cocktails whose flavor profiles extend from barnyard funk to pleasantly astringent. Representing Washington, Oregon and Idaho, the Pacific Northwest Cider Invitational showcases regional variations and plucky endeavors.

Ultimately, cider is a regional product, and not every part of the country has access to the best varieties of apples to make it. Even if a grower planted an orchard today, it would be at least seven years before those trees produced their first fruit. Not only are Washington and Oregon two of the country’s biggest states for beer and wine, but the Pacific Northwest is leading the way with craft ciders, too. It makes sense, especially as Washington leads the nation in apple production (171 million bushels in 2018). Additionally, the anything-goes, have-fun-and-get-creative attitude of the Pacific Northwest lends itself well to the creation of craft products.
